Nice work Toddie, keep that eye on the ball. Lots of junk food will fix that!
Todd Marshall hit by a curve 25/05/2008 Back again and starting to organized for a new season. Scotty Marshal has volunteered his time on Thursday nights so all wanting to learn and condition for the up an coming season to carry the club forward now is the time. Well done Scotty and I will see you out there as well. The grounds and clubroom looks like it is getting a make over which is terrific news now we need to match this with meaningful performances on the field. Now there is talk of name change to the club to be an affiliation to an oversees club, well my thoughts are 1. to be affiliated does not mean you should change names, a person who is affiliated; associate; auxiliary.... a subsidiary. 2. Name changes can be a costly exercise with registrations, uniforms and I am sure a lot more other things. How about we start putting the money into training equipment (upgrade of batting cages / another pitching machine to use out in the field, more baseballs for ALL grades etc.) 3. Lets consider winning ball games before our minds get diverted into anything else. I have been there when NDBC changed from Roosters to Reds and I must say the performances did not get any better, if anything they went down hill. I was at GGBC when the merger was coming in with CDBC and I must say the players were a unit but after the merger and adding the Central Districts to there name did not got them any further. It may have set them back a little because of the introduction of the new players broke that unit up. I would be very interested in your thoughts and way up the positives and the negatives.
11/05/2008 I will start this off with as I may have played my very last game due to the condition of my body, catching for all those years has taken its toll with re-occurring injuries to the hamstrings, back, neck and arm. Mind you I would never trade in catching for anything; it’s the best place on the field and in total control. So with this in mind I will be doing my best to keep improving the club but with saying that the coaches Reds had for the junior grades were very experienced and with full knowledge of play situations and techniques. I had seen some of Scotty and Frasers kids games along with JDs and these kids are good, so knowing that the club has future is satisfying. To the Div 1&2 side I would say they need to get their heads out of there bums and start doing a job, not only on the training track but during the games as well. The times of playing a sport fighting tooth and nail to get the job done has slowly dwindled away these guys need to grow a set of balls. Even the lower divisions still had the killer in them which made them a lot more successful than the Div 1&2. Time is now to start strengthening bodies and minds, learning to power hit and working out situations through a little bit of hard work.
10/03/08 Season Finished With Promising Signs 28th February playing Kensington out our own ground was always going to be a tough task but it would be good for the team to set themselves a personal challenge. Kensington came out firing right from the very first dig scoring 3 to our 0 and that set the standard for the rest of the game. The players once again had tatally let themselves down with the final score being 10-0. That is the first time this season that we have been held to 0 runs which you can take it as a positive or a negetive. 7th February Brings us to the final game of the season wanting to scratch in a win. Things really didn't go all that well with Drew having another crack on the moundc and to be quite honest, doing his job. There were errors time and time again all around the field costing run after run after run and with the bats not working turned it into a complete desaster going down 11-4.
If you don't understand what I write its probably because I dont check it.. Management material
31/01/09 The Wins Continue 18th January sent us way down south to play a double header in the 1s and a single in the 2s. Well let me tell you that we may have arrived but to me we were not wanting to play. The mindset was poor from the 2s game and seemed to follow on in the 1s. Very very disappointing day for all but it was probably what we needed after looking at the past couple of weeks. Our games has been off beat just a little but we seemed to be getting away with it. We went down 9-1 in the first and 12-4 in the second. The only positive thing to take out of the game was that even playing so poorly we could still scrounge a few runs. 24 January put us against Golden Grove which just come off two wins against Sturt on the weekend prior so we were set up for a battle. Well the Reds came out to play again with a few words prior to the start of the game in 2s and 1s may have put the players back to the right frame of thinking. U/18s started the show with Patrick, Drew and Raef being coaches of them, filling there heads with advanced knowledge which is paying off tremendously. Every person on that U/18s side knows what there job is and where to go in situations which is a fantastic start to there senior level carrier. U/18 had a great win with the Div2 watching on which I am sure had contributed to the desperation of the their game. So it goes on Div2 winning with Aaron Charles doing it once again for us on the mound. Aaron is coming of age and with the work with Scotty Marshall pre-season is making him very valuable. Aaron has finished games for us in the 1s and doing the job in 2s. As the story goes the Div1 one sitting on the far fence watching the end of this game would also have contributed to the mind set for the next game. Div1 come in with a win also 13-4 which is a great sign that we now have our bats and attitude back. Another great job on the mound for Scotty Marshall and once again Raef Hobbs-Brown finishing it off. Within saying how great the pitchers are I know that with Patrick Arlis behind the plate has a great influence on how they go.Next game against Woodville will certainly see if we have turned around our slump. 27 January heading down to Woodville on one of those horrible twilight games we were once again a few men down due to injuries and work commitments but depth is probably increased this year so we could overcome these problems this time. We started off with the "MILLIER TIME" (drew) on the mound to try something different and to give the rest of our pitchers a break, knowing that Drew would throw strikes was an easy decision to do this. Well this had paid off as Drew pitched innings after innings making things very difficult for the Woodville batters and with Pat behind the plate was pretty to watch. In saying that young Danny Cook had got the nod to come up from the U/18s and fill in centrefield which can be a very demanding position playing it right. Well he did not let anybody down with some great hits and catches but then we also have the rest of the side, Josh Benson also getting his chance, Raef with multiple hits has a minor slump but as per every year keeps putting in and reeks the rewards as every man on that team has this year. There has been a lot of write ups on Drew Miller which obviously is a major talent is a great thing for us because the run makers are hidden in the background so the other teams are not focusing on the the right people, mind you Drew does have a habit of hitting bombs along with Pat. Final score 10-3
26/02/08 Enthusiasm Drys Up Costing 1st February was probably a sad day for baseball when all games on that weekend were cancelled due to the on going heat. Never in all the years of senior and junior baseball have I ever seen this done, dropping Division 1 games was a costly call for quite a few clubs. 7th February saw a game that need to be forgotten in a hurry. It was the ugliest, messiest and totally out of control game I have seen for a long time, going down 15-3 with one of our players ejected from the game and just happens to be one of our pitchers. This is the second time this year we have been in this situation which puts a great strain on the rest of the players trying to pick up the pieces he has left behind. Admitedly the large number of umpiring mistakes did frustrate a lot of us but we must try and keep control of emotions sometimes. The severe lack of enthusiasm before the game followed on into the game leaving us with minimal hits causing the low run score. To give yourself a chance in any game we must hit hit HIT!.. 15th February brings us up against Sturt so I was quietly confident of grabbing a couple of wins in the double header. BUT we followed on from last weeks effort being down for some reason I am trying to figure out, but meanwhile we must keep pushing and pushing to get out of this low. Drew doing a fantastic job on mound with Pat behind the plate did way more than I had expected, if only we could hold those basic errors by others. Going down 5-2 in the first game was near respectable but in the second it blew out to 15-6 putting us further down in the minds. There were a few Division 1 players having a lack of commitment so replacing them with Div2 and under U/18s players was a plus. It was never a gamble because I have seen these guys play, Div2s are definatly pushing 1s for there spot and under 18s are not far away. Tom Brooks, Danny Cook and Nick Clifton coming into the game with them all getting solid hits was fantastic, its a great learning curve for these guys. Darren Mead is definatly in for a start after coming into the game and grabbing two hits for two at bats.. Well done guys. 22nd February brings up against Port Adelaide being in 4th spot. Now I am thinking that the moves made last week may have woke a few players up. The game was tight all the way to the 9th with level scores 3-3. Was only until then it was set up by Pat for a double play at home with intentional walks to 2 good hitters leaving a lesser coming up with loaded bases and one out. Pat had called this play all the way which was the correct thing to do, the thought was in my mind but wasn't game enough to call it which questions myself as a coach. The plan was turning out perfect, the batter grounded to short so all we needed was a throw to home then to first and "BANG" we are back in the box to hit again. Didn't happen and I will leave it as that but it is another learning curve for a great youngster. Went down 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth. Raef had done another top job on the mound agianst ports with completing every innings in style and if we had to go further innings he was still looking stronge to continue.
5/01/09 The Good, The Better, The Best On 16th December was a twilight game playing against Port Adelaide last years premiers for the second time. First time round we had beaten them 8-7 and knowing that this time they will not take us so lightly again we had to give it all. That we did which some aggression that has not been there for the last few weeks, players were hitting well but not finding the gaps and the fielding was on song making it a great game of ball. Final scores were 1-1 with catcher Patrick Arlis giving us our only run with a hard hit homer. Raef Hobbs-brown had pitched another great game with Dan Oswald finishing the game for him in great style. I know with Patrick Arlis behind the plate with his knowledge, playing ability and teaching skills makes pitchers perform above themselves at times as well as installing confidence in the rest of the side. Not forgetting Drew Miller who covers the outfield like no one else in the league and hit the ball further than anyone else. Raef Hobbs-Brown and Scott Marshall spreading plenty of knowledge but then I could keep going with blokes like Duncan Sanders, Michael Whelan and so on. It is a well organized outfit and that has been my way always, if your not organized you have in house fighting, poor performances and irritability. No different than a workplace. 20th December was going to be another challenge for us but once again we came out firing with the bats knocking up 5 runs within three digs. Goodwood having some players out would have still struggled with them in as we were out to attack in all departments, pitching, batting and the field work was outstanding. Final scores 14-7 was something to go into the break with. 4th January is going to be yet another test for us playing Glenelg which are one of the premiership contenders. Finally not playing them in a twilight game would be a positive for us having all our players available unlike twilights where people have to work and struggle to games. Once again we jumped out of the box scoring 2 runs in the first and Glenelg scoring 0. Come the fifth dig we were still leading 5-2 but then a slump in the seventh put Glenelg equal to us, going into the ninth Glenelg in great scoring position runners on second and third with 1 out. With our heads on we had stayed tough to get an out at home and a play at first both assisted by Duncan Sanders, Great work. Bottom of the ninth we only had to scrape in 1 run to win and that we did. Michael Whelan leading us off with a double and Adam Kannenberg punching the ball safely into righfield bringing Michael home. Very lucky Adam since you did miss something called signals but all forgiven. WELL DONE TEAM REDS!.
16/01/09 Giving A Good Old Fashion "plugging away" Pays Off 6th January feeling quietly confident in putting it up to East Torrens. Things did not go really as planned but we managed to adapt ourselves into a different style of game, quite like Glenelgs. East Torrens Jumped in the first dig bringing in two runs then scored one more in the 4th but to our credit we had managed to hold them pretty well. We had also scored one in the 4th putting us two runs down at this time and still quietly confident knowing that our blokes can hit. Well it came down to the last dig, two runs down, we finally cracked the bases. Scored one then there were two out and our equalizing run rounding third heading for home, ball coming in from deep outfield BANG! you're out. It was a do or die play for East Torrens that paid off. Its one of those plays that you practice for and very seldom use it. Come 11th January we are not to far away playing against Golden Grove and knowing that they are going to give it all against us after the first time round when we had mercied them. Once again we did not have a good game and we were out hit all day but we kept plugging away and not once panicked, putting the pressure on finally paid off for us scoring three in tm eighth giving us a one run lead then held them out in the last to pinch the game. With Division2 having wins as well means that the improvement this season is with the whole club in general which is fantastic and the future looks much more promising. Division1 only dropping one game out of the last 5. Well done to the REDS "TEAMS"
04/11/2008 The Good, The Bad And The Ugly On Tuesdays Twilight game was a follow on from Sunday. Catcher turned into Pitcher Pea was an experiment that went a little wrong, I am taking the responsibility for the runs hit against us BUT not for only being able to score one run. I did not see any sense in risking another unconditioned pitcher to only slow Glenelg up, so I opted to wash the game and have everyone fresh for a double header against West Torrens away. It almost paid off but with again some simple errors bit us on the ass again, time to help our pitchers out by making the plays that are there. Run scoring was much better with the first game going down 11-5 and the second game 7-5. West Torrens did everything they could to stop us from scoring which is a good sign for us. Troy was the starting pitcher followed by Dan Oswald and doing a fantastic job in a difficult situation. The second game started with Scotty Marshall followed by Raef Hobbs-Brown and together doing a great job. The bats were swinging well with Duncan Sanders just about unbeatable showing that determination can take you a long way. Drew Miller is back to beat up any pitcher that is put to him with two long bombs on the Sunday.
1/12/1008 Chances there but not taken.
With a another month down with no glory. In saying that there has been great signs of wanting to play with aggression. There were a number of games that should have been taken but they slid away with one or two things not going our way. Once again kept up with the league leaders West Torrens only to go down in the later digs 9-6. We had our opportunities against Adelaide especially in the second game but we must learn from this and grasp a positive out of it. The game against Genelg we were just well and truly beaten by a better side but only going down by 4 runs. Last Sundays game was an absolute disgrace in Div1 and Div2 having one player yellow carded in Div2 and our pitcher ejected in Div1. Sounds a bit suspicious doesn't it? I will leave it at that. This weeks training will be solid with the discipline being drilled in so with just a 2% of improvement will win us games.
27/10/2008 East Torrens brings us back to earth. Starting off well with 2 runs in the first would have looked like we were at it again BUT came crunch time with our newest pitcher failing miserably with not even completing the first innings after last week getting tossed off the mound in the second innings. This is not acceptable in any grade and will not happen again as I should have gone with my first thoughts which was not to pitch him until he wants to learn. He seems to be a very costly player for such little return so I am hoping that our senior players will give him an awakening to get him to put in a lot more effort. The only other thing is that I would hope the side can see how much damage a good side can do to you if you bubble the ball a few times. On the good side of things the hitting was still up and Scotty Marshal pitching out the rest of the 8.1 innings giving up minimal hits. Realistically the score should have not been a margin as big as that. 12-4 down.
22/10/2008 Joy at last
Playing Port Adelaide the premiers of 07/08 was always going to be a tough game so we were prepared for anything thrown at us. Well they went home stunned, heads up there you know whats and sulking straight after the game. As time has gone on in baseball the times of having a chat with the opposition has diminished. I always played it as war on the field and sportsman off but obviously different teams have their own rules. Final score 8-7
18/10/2008 The games begin. Here we are with one game down. Playing Woodville at there home ground was a real gauge on how far we have traveled pre-season. In my opinion is that Woodville has improved from last years efforts and being a young side they would be looking for a big future so in saying that we only went down be 3 runs with a couple of mental errors costing us 4 runs. All in all not to bad.
12/09/2008 Training continues
As the season is climbing upon us all is looking good and I am confident that it will be a successful year, the turn out at trainings are still in the high numbers and everyone is doing the extra yards to condition their bodies to benefit (because of my shoulder condition I am not included in that). Right from the first training session it has been a great response with that we are still getting new players out to prop up the Div2 and push for Div1 making a great place to be.
28/08/2008 Kevin Price stumble. For these who may have not heard Kevin Price has pulled out at late notice of the events at Reds this season for perhaps reasons he may want to keep personal and that is fair enough too. I am sure there are many of us do thank him for everything he did for us and wish nothing but the best for the future. On that note it has opened up the door for another experience so we will welcome in a new bloke Patrick Arlis (import) and I say new to the club not new to baseball trust me. He has a fair background to him and comes highly recommended. Raef Hobbs-Brown, Patrick Arlis and Drew Miller have heads full of knowledge and we have all seen Drew, would have to be the strongest hitter / outfielder that has played down under along with that has played third base come pitcher for us. Raef being a quick infielder and pitcher come catcher come where ever and another great hitter in the lineup. Then comes Patrick!! Sorry that you blokes had to be everywhere last season but I can say that it will not happen to you this season. Numbers are up and we are in for a very very different season. Another new bloke is Troy Harrison. Troy is a monster of a man with a fantastic arm connected to the creature. He is very much a club man with that I am sure his parents in Port Pirie are loving the fact that he is here in Adelaide giving them peace and quite. Scotty Marshall has done a fantastic job working with coaching clinics through winter and I have no doubt the the time and knowledge he has put into these guys will show like dog b*lls. The first training session was a straight up and into it no mucking around, I am absolutely sure that there were many new good habits learnt with a fantastic turn out. With the presents of Dion Marshall, Micheal Whelan, Scotty Marshall, Duncan Sanders and even Thomo showing off a few old tricks making training made it very successful spreading knowledge. Time is now that the Reds need to look after each other, teach each other and help correct techniques which has started, making for a great season. The juniors will also benefit with Matt Fraser being junior co-ordinater and with the help of senior players at training and games without question throughout the season helping secure their future and the clubs future. Volunteers:There were people whom gave up there time to upgrade clubrooms and grounds and other behind the scenes projects to get the season started in their own time at their own costs and it seems to be the same people which is to about to change (one in all in).
13/08/2008 Get your gear together Blokes its nearly time to play hard ball!!
Come on over for a very different season blokes KevinPrice, Drew Miller and Raef Hobbs. Looking forward to seeing you guys back.
18/06/2008 Well done to the people who rocked up on Sunday to do their bit for the club BUT we do need more help. 1st base has come up a treat, nice and level so no excuse for missed balls right guys? I believe the working bee is on again next Sunday so please all help out all as one.
23/06/2008
Another day gets closer to the start of the season and me myself and I am quite looking forward to the challenges ahead of our senior and junior players. Spectators, volunteers, scorers, the bloke keeping us informed all year round (Murray), committee members, wives, girlfriends have done a remarkable job sticking by the club in tough times and if I have missed anyone out don't be afraid to let me know. I do know that we will be having a better year than the past few with some stronger hitting to all of the fields, not giving away easy bases and players have more instinctive responses. Its time to get out of our shells and attack at all times instead of just getting through the game playing safe. I want all the sideline coaches to keep their say within as I know opinions can be disruptive as well of being constructive, if you want to have a comment or disagree with something please do not have a chat amongst people just give me a call or email me because there may be a reason for things happening, I will listen. I will not tolerate open negativity around the club as its time to move on and be positive, giving encouragement will create good friendship and mateship between all because we are not being there to see Reds fail. I am hoping to get the divisions 1 & 2 with a few juniors with coaches together on shortly to begin putting together a universal structure but this will be hard as people have different contact information now BUT we must start somewhere so spread the news. I have Hit-Man Dion Marshall to get the show going so if you here some yelling from the field it could possibly be him. As I, he will not take weakness as an excuse so being tougher and stronger will help in every way, by the way he does know baseball as well!! I will get an interview with Dion so keep an eye out on this page. Also looking forward to seeing our import players in full flight as we had a great crew come over last season, very informative and I must say, patient. Drew Miller from the Calgary Vipers was the most outstanding player in the whole competition, it was just a shame that he had very little back up from his team mates. THIS WILL CHANGE THIS SEASON!!!
09/07/2008 Well a few have gone past and the baseball field is looking great but with still a lot of work to be done. My weeks are going to be long now as its time to get my rotation cuff operated on tomorrow to reduce the constant pain that I am in especially after a day at work. Yes believe it or not my workplace had known about my shoulder for a number of years but I suppose not being a work related injury so they don't have to give me any lighter duties by the book, mind you they have willingly let a person go on workers compensation with light duties for a shoulder injury that the injured person said "most probably did it at home" in front of a few people and the right ones too. Does not pay to be an honest worker in some places. Besides all that crap, I am not really looking forward to this because this will hurt I figure, with the Physiotherapy failing to fix the problem its obviously in worse shape than I really wanted it to be in. Now boys and girls if you want to keep your arms and shoulders in good shape make sure you condition them first before hard throwing and most importantly make sure you have a good followthrough. Things are slowly taking a turn for the better at the club so keep in touch.
28/07/2008 This is just to shut Mick Bell up! Hello there, I made it back. The shoulder is still on but boy oh boy there is quite a bit of pain happening, not surprising with the amount of work that was done to it. I really have no complaints having a world wide known surgeon fixing it and now its up to me to complete the final stages which means looking after the shoulder, not stressing it out for quite a long time and following the rehabilitation procedures without fail. This may even mean changing my employment status to something with a little less labour attached to it. Back to the club itself for those whom have not guessed it I am the Club Coach so please any questions or information needed please do not hesitate to email me. Just by changing a few things already and putting in some guidelines the response has been fantastic, this is the best feeling the cub has within themselves for quite a long long time. Organization is a key factor to any organization wether it be at your home, workplace or sporting groups, it makes things a whole lot easier when everyone is going in the one direction. We have had outside help with brand new carpet in the clubrooms donated by Brian Sansderson "Pommie" from East Torrens Baseball Club as a return favor for letting the junior squads to use our grounds, FANTASTIC POMMIE and at the moment we are in the mist of buying new chairs for the club.Greg Kannenburg is the person to see because the idea of this is that each person can buy a chair or part of a chair as the club itself will not be buying them of there own back this year due to the rises in fees and administration to the league. We have the lowest fees in the league at the moment and to continue this tradition we do every now and again do ask for a little assistance by those who can and WELL DONE KANNAS for the idea and putting in the time to make sure this happens. Also lets welcome in Troy from Port Pirie, great big lad with a lot of talent. Shoulder pics below.
